Elsbeek Park

Hengelo - The construction of the Groot Driene district in Hengelo in the 1970s meant the bodies of water flowing through the rural area partially disappeared, and were cut off from the original catchment.

Elsbeek Park

The Hengelo local authority and the Regge en Drinkel water board have jointly developed a plan for rerouting one of the waterways, the Elsbeek, through the Groot Driene district.

ARCADIS Landscape Architecture outlined the location of the stream jointly with the residents. An important assumption when designing the new stream is that it must be given a natural appearance. The stream furthermore had to contribute to the experience, recreational and aesthetic value of the route. It was decided to opt for nature-friendly banks, where the space allowed this. This resulted in an asymmetrical profile at various locations, providing an extremely varied appearance. The stream runs through an orchard, along a school playground and ends in a large fish pond, after which it continues into Hengelo.
