Normandy - Arcadis France was assigned by ABMC, the American Battle Monuments Commission, to master plan the restoration of the Normandy American Cemetery & Memorial and the Pointe-du-Hoc site in Normandy, France. Arcadis Landscape Architecture & Urbanism (Amersfoort / The Netherlands) has contributed to this by making the spatial design. A very honorable assignment on which we have been working with great respect for the great heroes of yesteryear.
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located in the vicinity of Omaha Beach at Colleville-sur-Mer (Calvados), one of the historic landing sites of 6 June 1944 (D-Day). The cemetery was designed in the early 1950s. Arcadis landscape architecture & urbanism will support ABMC in drawing up a new master plan to reorganise the entrance and approach areas of the historic cemetery, which are going to be developed with a landscape design befitting the importance and solemnity of the site.
The Pointe-du-Hoc site was the scene of particularly heavy fighting during the landing of 6 June 1944, including the scaling under intense fire of a 30 m (100 ft) cliff by the US 2nd Ranger Batallion. The ABMC wants to launch a comprehensive study of the site's remembrance and interpretative functions, while considerably improving the protection of the cultural and natural heritage.
