The futuristic Research Laboratory building is by Ben van Berkel, while the layout and installation of the public space was down to ARCADIS Landscape Architecture. The work – Xy – and the layout of the new public space were coordinated a far as possible.
Central to the design is the usage space for students and the green character of the canal once found at this location. The significant diversity and distinctness of the buildings from various periods form the basis for the vision and the design, consisting of the layers 'the carpet', 'the grassland' and 'the canopy'. The carpet is made up of straightforward surfacing, providing tranquillity and doing justice to the different building styles and periods. The grassland, an oblong elevated field, refers to the former canal. The border around the grassland is used a seating for the students, the grass slope for catching some sun. The canopy consists of dispersed trees, providing intimacy and shade. The autumn and spring colours of the trees accentuate those of the buildings.
