Noordwijk - We have plenty of experience with the renovation of boulevards and coastlines. The coastline at Noordwijk was reinforced in the period from September 2007 through April 2008. The Arcadis landscape architecture department was involved in this complex project since 2002.
The coastline at Noordwijk has been reinforced by constructing a dike in the dunes. This is the first hybrid dike to be built in such a manner. At the same time, the dunes have been broadened by around 42 meters. The dike and the new dunes are the same height as the current dunes where possible, with a gradual transition into the existing dunes. The dune broadening process has moved the beach slightly further away from the boulevard. Furthermore, Noordwijk boulevard has undergone complete renovation.
In close cooperation with the parties involved and local residents, the Arcadis landscape architecture department was responsible for spatial quality design. Development scenarios for the area formed the basis. The marram grass has rooted nicely on the new dunes and the blue sea holly heads are once again popping up. The first generation of sand lizards have rediscovered their former habitat. Within a few years, the dunes will have regained their natural pattern, and it will be hard to imagine that they have changed at all.
