Parkstad Ring Road

Kerkrade - The Province of Limburg wants to install a new Ring Road for the Parkstad region, and asked ARCADIS to draw up the Provincial Integration Plan. Part of this is the Environmental Plan in which the spatial integration of the Ring Road is elaborated.

Parkstad Ring Road

The aim of the Environmental Plan is to provide insight into the intended design of the road and its environment, immediate or otherwise. The environmental plan broadly outlines the design, and thus acts as a quality-framework for the execution. It also forms the screening framework for the permits for engineering structures.

The Environmental Plan is an integrated plan in which road design, engineering structures, noise-reducing provisions and measures for compensation/mitigation have been designed in mutual cohesion, and in cohesion with the features characterising the plan area. The Environmental Plan is presented in three parts: Landscape integration – all elements playing a role in integrating the Ring Road into the landscape; secondly the quality-map of the area's characteristic features: relief, history, ecology, usage and image. Lastly there is the road design – the pattern of incisions and elevations in the relief. The landscape integration does justice to the landscape's special quality and the ambitions of Parkstad Limburg to enhance this quality. The plan map demonstrates the relationship between the existing landscape and urban areas, with measures for integration. Design principles constitute the link between the vision and the design, and have been elaborated for the relief, the environment and the appearance of the Ring Road. The recognisability of the connecting route, unity and continuity of the appearance are paramount in this respect. The quality of the environment is a significant source of inspiration for the design.
