China - The Chinese city of Wuhan is around 300 kilometres to the west of Shanghai. The city lies at a strategic location where the Grand Canal flows into the Yangtze River. The city stands out because of its considerable attention to retaining cultural-historic elements, in combination with developing the city sustainably. A 10 km2 new park is planned within the city, which will improve the city’s liveability. Underneath the park there is room for retail, parking and a metroline.
In the proposal by ARCADIS Landscape Architecture, the natural landscape forms an inspiration to design the whole park; valley, hills, meadows and lakes are transformed in retail and public spaces. The park also contributes to increasing biodiversity, and forms an ecological corridor across the urban area. Lastly, the park will contribute significantly to the city’s image, since preserving tradition and sustainable development also go hand in hand there.
