Istanbul Esenler Park

Our “Hortus Conclusus” concept represents the essence of a park by bringing nature to the citizen, to offer escape from the city, a green and open space for leisure and recreation and memories of the rural and cultural landscapes prior to the massive migration to the city. It’s also a hint to the genius loci of the coach station that during decades connected people with the seven biogeographical areas of Turkey. The Esenler Park is the result of a joint design and consultancy process with the team of the Transport Directorate of IBB, between May to August 2017.

The final concept design is a hybrid and evolved version of two of the three previously presented concepts during the first design phase. This final vision has been developed based on the “Hortus Conclusus” concept, combined with several client preferred design principles of the “Green Valley” concept. These design principles are the re-alignment of the tracks towards the East, in combination with the relocation of the station towards the Eastern site boundary, both embedded in the site’s natural topography. This option offers many advantages that are explained in detail. An iconic visitors pavilion is located above the new metro station. This visitors pavillion is a multi functional and multi purpose public building with a winter garden, a retail square and multifunctional rooms and spaces for sports, arts, education and culture. The park has a central area with cultivated bio-geographical gardens, “enclosed” by a hexagonal walkway. Outside of the hexagon the park becomes a vast extension of natural areas that consist of forests, open meadows, a dry creek area and several lakes. Public services and facilities are evenly spread around the park in order to optimise the servicelevel to the visitor. Access to the park is garantueed by all types of public and private transport. The main transport hub is around the central visitors pavillion, where metro, busstop, dolmus stops and taxi drop off offer a multimodal customer experience. Three car parks -centre, north and south- with a total capacity of 1,500 vehicles allow access by private vehicle.
