Shenzhen, Longgang district - Worldwide, cities are forced to address the vicious cycle of urban flooding, waterway degradation and groundwater over-extraction due to rapid urban development in flood-prone areas. Shenzhen’s population has grown at an astounding rate of over 9 million people in the last 40 years. The Chinese city is mostly built in the valley of the Longgang river and is facing flooding during heavy rainfall seasons.
Arcadis Landscape Architecture and urban design successfully collaborated with CRTKL and the Shenzhen University in a competition for a Masterplan in transforming 50 km2 of industrial waterfront area of the Longgang river into a resilient and attractive city center. The Masterplan the result of a nature-based design approach that uses the natural river system of main river and creeks and the existing topography to shape a new urban fabric.
The Masterplan is built up in four different steps: activate the main river, the resurrection of the secondary rivers, greening the banks of the river and connect the urban green structure to the surrounding mountain landscape. The river system is divided into five themed zones: folk culture, the green movement, ecological leisure, urban landscape and science and education. For each zone the team integrated a new urban development that responded to the theme with the Riverpark.
The city of Shenzhen will become a climate resilient city and provide healthy urban life for its inhabitants. The surrounding mountain landscape is never far away due to the green-blue park structures along the creeks. One could argue that the river valley will return in the hearth of the city, providing shade, fresh air, attractive leisure and healthy urban living. The Longgang river Masterplan will improve the quality of life of over ten million people.
